The Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC), a major conference for women in computing scheduled for October 27–30 in Anaheim, has been canceled two weeks before its start. Brenda Darden Wilkerson, president and CEO of AnitaB.org, stated that both individual registrations and sponsorship commitments fell significantly below expectations, leaving the nonprofit short of funds to cover operating costs. The cancellation has further strained AnitaB.org’s finances, which are now considering strategic alternatives for future programming.

Attendees were asked to cancel their own travel and lodging arrangements, though fees already paid have not been addressed as the organization awaits a clearer financial picture. Sponsors and exhibitors are being contacted directly, but no refund information was available at the time of reporting. AnitaB.org is also asking employers with scheduled career-fair interviews to continue conversations where possible without any guarantees. The event featured speakers including Kara Swisher, Michelle Zatlyn, Sinead Bovell, Cathy Hackl, and Telle Whitney.

Financial data from IRS filings shows that AnitaB.org lost $14.6 million in 2024 on revenue of $27.5 million against expenses of $42.1 million. Its net assets roughly halved while liabilities nearly doubled. Contributions and grants dropped from $11.2 million in 2023 to just $724,350 in 2024. Attendance also declined from 29,000 in 2023 to 17,000 in 2024. The GHC itself reported expenses of $26.9 million against revenue of $22.4 million in 2024. AnitaB.org plans to contact registrants regarding their fees by October 26, with further announcements expected soon.
