Redditor u/cal93 purchased a used PC for $650 from an unnamed seller on OfferUp. The device stopped working after downloading a Windows update because it was remotely blocked by the rental firm, Fragile. Fragile confirmed that the computer was rented through its NZXT Flex subscription program and that the seller had no right to sell it. Documents reviewed by Tom’s Hardware show that the company sent u/cal93 a brand new PC free of charge to replace the stolen one, with the condition that the original device be turned in to police.

"We’re sorry you’ve been put in this situation," the company stated in its response. It explained that while the buyer paid for what they believed was a legitimate purchase, the seller did not own the equipment. Fragile offered to work with the buyer and local law enforcement to pursue the seller, asking u/cal93 to keep proof of payment and original listings. The Redditor agreed to this plan after providing receipts and seller information.

The NZXT Flex rental program launched in 2024 for people who cannot afford upfront costs but need a computer immediately. The program faced significant issues over a year ago, leading to a RICO lawsuit in California that resulted in a $3.45 million settlement earlier this year. While some commenters view this outcome as a rare win for the user, u/cal93 stated they received the best possible scenario by getting a replacement device while the company pursues the scammer.
