Pre-orders for THE 800XL began today from Retro Games Ltd, a modernized recreation of the classic 8-bit home computer popular in the early 1980s. The device features era-appropriate elements like built-in Atari BASIC and a working cartridge slot, alongside modern additions such as a mechanical keyboard, HDMI connectivity, and four USB ports for controllers and storage. Namer Merli, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Plaion, stated that the design captures "an entire way of experiencing technology," emphasizing real keys, cartridges, and discovery through programming and games.

The pre-order price is set at $219, with a shipping date of April 23, 2027. The system includes 25 built-in games and supports most Atari 400, 800, XL, and XE cartridges. It also features software for the Atari 5200 console and allows users to load their own games from USB drives using cartridge, disk, or cassette image formats. While the original 1983 model used specific chips like the MOS Technology 6502B processor, no technical details have been released regarding the new hardware yet.

The bundle includes an updated THECXSTICK joystick with eight buttons and four save slots per game. A rewind feature allows users to skip back up to 40 seconds. The display supports authentic 4:3 pixel-perfect modes with optional CRT filters, offering PAL (50Hz) and NTSC (60Hz) options across 12 frames. The original Atari 800XL launched in November 1993 at $299 in the U.S., while this new version is priced at USD $219.99, GBP £199.99, EUR €219.99, and AUD $349.99.
