A redesigned version currently in testing runs on WinUI 3, a modern interface framework. Anshul Rawat, corporate vice president of the Windows product team at Microsoft, states that this experience is built for speed and represents part of a broader effort to modernize core Windows experiences. Early testing indicates substantial improvements in performance and memory usage without adding extra bloat.

Visually, the new interface features speedy animations and a large preview pane that surfaces results inline, similar to iOS and Android. It also extends previews to files like PowerPoint presentations and photos. Behind the scenes, Microsoft is enhancing how the system understands queries, including better matching for typos and synonyms. Rawat confirms these improvements are happening alongside the visual updates.

The new search acts as a launcher, allowing users to perform tasks like turning Bluetooth or dark mode on and off. It can also minimize windows or open apps side-by-side. When used with Phone Link, it extends actions to the phone, such as sending text messages by typing commands. Microsoft is testing this interface with Windows Insiders now, aiming for a release in the coming months. Rawat notes that work is already underway to bring the experience to the Start menu and adapt it to different taskbar positions and configurations by next year.

Source: The Verge • Tom Warren • October 8, 2026

Read the original article at The Verge →

AI-rewritten: This is a summary of an article from The Verge, rewritten by AI (Qwen, running locally) to make it easier to read.
