Microsoft recently held a keynote in San Francisco announcing updates for Windows and Surface devices. The main highlight was the release details for the Surface Laptop Ultra, which runs on Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip based on Arm architecture. This laptop starts at $2,599 with an 8-core CPU, 24GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage, launching on October 16th. It features a built-in magnetic USB-C charging port instead of the older proprietary Surface Connect connector. Microsoft also made the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box available for preorder at $5,999, with shipping scheduled for November.

New Windows updates include "Hybrid Intelligence," allowing Copilot to access local files and perform actions across the operating system. During a demo, Jacob Andreou, Microsoft’s EVP of Copilot, showed how Autopilot could find documents, organize them, and draft an email to an accountant using this new capability. The Surface Laptop Ultra includes a 15-inch HDR touchscreen with up to 2,000 nits of brightness and a larger trackpad with haptic feedback. Both Microsoft and Nvidia are positioning these devices for the premium market, focusing on creative software, gaming, and local AI tasks.

Before public release, Microsoft tests its Surface laptops in a lab in Redmond, Washington. There, robots press buttons thousands of times, radio waves test durability, and objects are dropped from heights to ensure products hold up. The Nvidia RTX Spark chip offers up to 128GB of unified memory, designed to run large AI models exceeding 120 billion parameters on-device. While the Dev Box is primarily for developers testing AI agents and coding tools, its thermal design and Tensor cores suggest potential for impressive gaming performance as well.
