If you want to see what it\u2019s like to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensauce.com\/exhibits\/microwave-food-simulator\">microwave your own head<\/a>, you go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensauce.com\/\"><u>Open Sauce in San Mateo, California.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The decidedly quirky maker festival marked its fourth year a few weeks ago, bringing together inventors, makers, artists, cosplayers, YouTubers, and yes, a number of sponsors. It defies the traditional FDM layered printing process with its tilting print head and rotating bed feature, eliminating the need for supports. They had an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/3d-printing\/elegoo-announces-bizarre-3d-printer-collab-with-emoji-brand-special-edition-centauri-carbon-2-combo-is-priced-at-usd489-usd\"><u>emoji x Centauri Carbon 2<\/u><\/a> on display with many emoji-themed props for visitors to use for selfies. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"snapmaker-u1-toolchanger\">Snapmaker: U1 toolchanger<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure  inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:1262px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.26%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"67Q4Sid8HNP7UwMDiXH7Xj\" name=\"IMG_7651\" alt=\"Open Sauce 2026\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/67Q4Sid8HNP7UwMDiXH7Xj.jpg\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"\" width=\"1262\" height=\"710\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"inline\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\" class=\" inline-layout\"><span class=\"credit\" itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: Tom&#8217;s Hardware)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Snapmaker brought their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/3d-printing\/snapmaker-u1-review\" target=\"_blank\"><u>U1 toolchanger<\/u><\/a>, which printed this mostly 3D-printed, fan-made Star Wars speeder bike, built with an electric scooter cleverly hidden underneath so it appears to float along the road. We\u2019ll be checking that one out soon.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"three-for-uv\">Three for UV<\/h2>\n<p>UV printing is an industrial technology just now landing on home users\u2019 desktops in the form of somewhat affordable machines. It\u2019s like a cross between 2D photo printing and resin 3D: it uses UV-cured ink to print photographic color on nearly any material you can place inside the machine\u2019s compartment. This can be flat stickers and photos or \u201c2.5D textures\u201d that are generally limited to a few millimeters in height. Some machines are even venturing into full color 3D printing. <\/p>\n<p>The tech is very new, with most machines still at the prototype stage or lurching its way through Kickstarter. <\/p>\n<p>We are aware of five companies making the attempt to shrink these $50,000+ machines down to something a small business or garage-based entrepreneur can wrap their budgets around. The company brought out all its lasers and creator tools, with plenty of team members standing by to run demos. I was particularly interested in the new<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/maker-stem\/xtool-says-its-01-omni-printer-can-print-it-all-firm-steps-into-the-world-of-uv-printing-for-output-on-all-surfaces-at-up-to-5mm-thick\"> xTool O1 Omni<\/a>, a four-in-one UV printer that can print on any material you can stuff in the print zone. <\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re waiting on a production-quality review unit for the Omni, which should be arriving soon. However, this one looks pretty good and is backed by xTool\u2019s tremendous experience in similar categories. Unfortunately, being first is not always best when it comes to technology, and the company had some supply chain issues when their Kickstarter was overwhelmingly successful. The unknown startup took a modest booth in the main hall and brought their founder and CEO, Brett Wang, to personally demo the unit. Wang comes from DJI, where he was the former VP of R&#038;D and founder of the company\u2019s camera division. If that sounds familiar, Bambu Lab\u2019s CEO, Dr. Tao, headed up consumer drones for DJI before launching his own 3D printer company. We\u2019re looking forward to reviewing this open-source UV printer as soon as it\u2019s ready.<\/p>\n<p>But this was Open Sauce, and though we love to see what&#8217;s coming to our retail shelves, the real draw is the projects. They demonstrated how plastic can be shredded, melted, and injection-molded into new products. This built-from-scratch train had tons of 3D-printed parts to give the steel body detail for a cheaper price: the lights, the numbers, the latches, air tanks, suspension, and more.
