Gitlin<br \/>\n                <\/strong><br \/>\n &bull;<br \/>\nAugust 6, 2026\n<\/div>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Ford&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2025\/08\/ford-switches-gears-will-push-smaller-evs-over-full-size-pickup-and-van\/\">second attempt<\/a> at an electric vehicle strategy is getting closer to primetime. After its initial approach of electrifying its best-selling F-150 fell a little flat, it decided to try something a little radical. <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2026\/05\/how-do-you-design-a-30000-electric-pickup-inside-fords-skunkworks\/\">An internal skunkworks<\/a> was set up in California with a brief to rethink the idea of a universal EV platform from the ground up, taking into account the advances made by EV startups and clean-sheet designs both in the US but especially China.<\/p>\n<p>And today, we found out what that first new EV\u2014an affordable four-door pickup truck\u2014will be called: the Ford Fathom.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2025\/08\/ford-bets-big-on-universal-ev-production-system-and-30k-truck\/\">known for some time<\/a> that the first EV built on Ford&#8217;s new UEV platform was going to be a pickup truck.
