And its initial offering wasn&#8217;t a quantum computer like those being developed by IBM or Google. Instead, <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2013\/08\/d-waves-black-box-starts-to-open-up\/\">the company built<\/a> what&#8217;s now called a quantum annealer, a machine that isn&#8217;t general-purpose but can <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2019\/10\/what-problems-can-you-solve-on-a-quantum-annealer\/\">solve a large class of optimization problems<\/a>. While the hardware shares some similarities with the qubits used in gate-based quantum computers, it operates in a fundamentally different way.<\/p>\n<p>But a few years back, D-Wave started working on gate-based hardware, apparently choosing a somewhat unusual qubit technology <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fluxonium\">called fluxonium<\/a>.
